Golden Fire Wood Pellets

I was asked by Bob Sourek, the owner of Bear Mountain Forest Products to give you a description of our Bear Mountain and Goldenfire wood fuel pellets. I am an engineer, not a marketing person, so I will do my best to tell you exactly what we produce, not necessarily what looks good for advertisement copy.

Goldenfire is a 100% Douglas Fir Pellet that we produce to exacting standards. These are the averages of our last 52 random weekly samples as tested by Twin Port Testing, Superior, WI.

  • Moisture Content: - 1.67%
  • Ash Content: - 0.19%
  • Heating Value - As Received: - 8496 Btu/lb
  • Heating Value - Moisture Free: - 8662 Btu/lb

    • Please note that I could have given you the results from a single test with phenomenal results. Instead, this is a representation of what we produce every day. I included both the moisture free heat values and the heat value of the product as received. The heat value as received is the best indicator of the heat available for heating your home because it includes the negative impact of moisture in the pellets.

We are not the only producer of Douglas fir pellets. However, I am not aware of any other manufacturer that is willing to come anywhere near the low moisture content of our pellets. The difference between our average of 1.67% moisture and a 6% PFI premium pellet is that the higher moisture pellet has almost a quart more water that has to be boiled off, not to mention 4.3% less wood in the bag. The consistently low ash content is the result of using Douglas fir and having very tight control over raw material sources.

Bear Mountain is same as our Goldenfire brand except we can mix up to 5% Western Red Cedar with the Douglas fir. We cannot detect a difference in testing other than a very slight increase in ash and an equally slight increase in heating value.

We are willing to go head to head with any pellet produced using independent lab tests or stove tests.

2012 Best of the Best West Coast easy.  This is a very impressively hot pellet which leave next to nothing for ash.  This is a "burn all year" wood pellet.

I have been using my pellet stove for 22 years, and have tried several different brands of pellets over the years. In the beginning I used only Golden Fire, but through the years availability and price led me to another brand. This year I bought a pallet of Golden Fire at Home Depot because of the good price and my past experience. I must say these are the worst pellets I have ever used. Very high ash and incomplete burning. My stove was cleaned shortly before I started using the Golden Fire pellets, so I know that it is not the stove. I see there are other similar complaints - what's up?

I have had a pellet stove since 1992 and over the years have used numerous brands of which I have been the most pleased with Golden Fire. A few years ago there was a shortage of pellets and I had to burn various brands (Blazer, Lignetics, etc.) They were okay, but none seemed to burn as clean as Golden Fire including the more expensive Lignetics pellets. The worst brand that sells for about $1 less per bag was Mallard. The ash from the Mallard brand gummed up the burn tray and glass got dirty quite quickly. I would rather pay the extra $1 bag for Golden Fire.

I've used and loved Golden Fire for 20 years. This year is different. They don't heat as well as they used to.

I have burned Golden Fire for several years, at least six. We have tried a few bags of other brands off and on but always went back to Golden Fire. But this is the first year that we are unhappy with them. The glass gets dirt faster, and there seems to be more ash then usual. I am looking for a change now until this problem is solved. Our stove is an Avalon, and get regular cleanings.

We love your pellets and there is no comparison that we have found with any other manugacturer. However, we have a hard time finding them at this time of year. We live in San Jose, CA and would like to know of retailers. Lowes is completely out.

The "Golden Fire" Wood Pellets emit an acidic odor, almost like smelling Vinegar, but we don`t leave open bags in the House. Once they are in the hopper of the stove, you can barely smell them.To bad that Home Depot displays a "Golden Fire" bag on their
website, when they don`t carry the product. They sell"Premium Blazer"!!!
"Golden Fire" burns hotter, leaves glass cleaner than "Premium Blazer", but the "Blazer does`nt smell.

I too have been put off by the odor of the pellets when you open the bag.

If in fact pellets are made without any additive, what makes this smell.

In addition to a heating pellet stove, I just bought a TRAEGER bbq pellet grill. I have used your pellets for yrs. for the heating stove. I am curious if your pellets are "safe" for cooking...in other words...could they be considered "food grade"???

Always heard Golden Fire pellets were the most efficient and cleanest on market. My first pallet this year were very clean and efficient this second pallet total opposite. Cleaning glass twice a day and stove every other day.

I'm guessing KR works for another pellet provider... I've been burning Golden Fire for 30 years, and have burned cheaper pellets when the wallet was lean...
Golden fire burns Hot, True, and Clean....
KR... perhaps you should find a job with Golden Fire instead!

      Dear Friends,
Just installed a King Ashley 1000M. Bought four pallets of Goldenfire at Meeks; now in dry storage using half of my garage. Stove was professionally installed and tested for airflow. The last several bags burned have left me cleaning the pot every 12 hours? I thought these stoves and pellets were low maintenance. The Goldenfire has so much glue in it that it readily clogs the box in short order. Had less maintenance burning my wood stove and twice the heat. Pellet stoves-Phhhtttt!

We use Golden Fire, but some time ago I heard from a worker in a hardware store that Golden Fire had some kind of problem a year or more ago. I think their equipment broke down and they were getting pellets from another company. These pellets were inferior and they produced a lot of ash as well as a bad smell. The quality of pellets is not what it was originally.

I have used Golden Fire pellets in my Kozi Model 100 stove for two years. They put out more heat and leave less ash than other brands of pellets. We used a mix of Golden Fire and Blazer pellets last year and found that the Blazers put out less heat and produced more ash. I wish I could find a lower BTU per pound pellet that we could use when the temperature is not so cold. When it is above 40 degrees, the Golden Fire pellets just cook us out and we have to cycle the stove more than I would like.

I have burned golden fire for 1 year and they burn good and hot with very little ash. I only had to clean my stove once last year.

I've used Golden Fire for years in my Whitfield pellet stove with excellent results. I'll bet the terrible smell that KR had was creosote in his chimney. If he had been using cheaper pellets or hadn't had his chimney swept well and then he burned some of the hotter burning Golden Fire, the creosote in the chimney would stink. When you smell the creosote smell, it's a reminder to call the chimney sweep.

I would like to know if it is safe to use Golden Fire pellets in my pellet barbeque.

We just got five bags of the Golden Fire pellets from Lowe's because we ran out of the ton of pellets we bought last year. The Golden Fire pellets are a lot better in quality and put out more heat. There also seems to be less ash left behind. No foul odor. I'm going to keep buying them. They may be a little more expensive but they're worth it.

Does anyone have the smell problem described by KR?

K R -- Where did you buy your 6 tons from?

Love these pellets they leave a teaspoon of ash after hours of burning compared to cheaper brand product, it's worth the extra price, no problems and i discovered these when the other store ran out of the cheaper stuff and i havnt gone back since.

Last fall I purchased 6 tons of golden fire wood pellets and they had a very obnoxious chemical smell. I am wondering what they put in the pellets to cause this smell. The smell made us ill. This was a costly learning experience not only to our pocket book but our health as well. We used golden fire in the past and never had the problem until last fall and we checked them out today and they still have that terrible chemical smell. Whenever anybody entered our house they would ask what is that terrible smell. Just a bag of these pellets sitting in our house emits such a terrible chemical smell. Golden Fire owes it to the public to disclose the source of this odor so we know exactly what we are being exposed to and just how harmful it is to our health

The best I have ever used. Very little ash.
